- Pronouncing R-
In this section, we will be looking at R- sound. R- is represented by the phonetic symbol /r/. This sound is unique in that it can be produced two different ways. You can find whichever way feels most comfortable and natural for you.
Method 1 (solid line in the photo)
The sides of your tongue will touch your upper back teeth. The tip of your tongue can point either up or stay down. The tip of your tongue will never touch your teeth or the roof of your mouth.
Method 2 (dotted line in the photo)
The back of your tongue stays low as the tip of your curls behind your tooth ridge. Your tongue will never touch your teeth or the roof of your mouth.
For me, method 1 is the most natural and this is the method I use to pronounce /r/.
You will find the R- (/r/) sound in words such as:
raise /reɪz/
every /ˈevri/
door /dɔr/
The /r/ sound is a voiced consonant, so you will feel vibration in your throat as you produce this sound.
